Billet Power Steering Pulley

 

 

Dirty Dingo Motorsports billet power steering pulleys are installed in the same manner as OEM pulleys. These install instructions for Dirty Dingo Motorsports billet pulleys will also apply to your OEM GM pulleys on your OEM GM pumps. The 97-13 Corvette and 99-13 LS Truck billet pulleys need to be pressed on til the shaft of the pump sits flush with the outter edge of the pulley. If you pressed the pulley on further than that then you will have to use the removal tool to bring the pulley back into proper alignment. It is easier to constantly remove the install tool to verify if you have installed the pulley all the way than it is to have to use the removal tool to bring it back into proper alignmnent. 1998-2002 Camaro pulleys have a machined stop inside the pulley and need to be pressed till the shaft bottoms out. Read the entire install instruction page before installing/removing a pulley. 

 

*DO NOT USE AIR TOOLS OR POWER TOOLS FOR REMOVAL OR INSTALL OF POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEYS! 

*It is NOT recommend to use remanned pumps as they do not last long. 

*Use the proper tools for install/removal or you will damage the pulley and/or pump itself.

 

The power steering pulley install/remover tool is the most important part of this process. It is NOT recommended to use the claw pulley or the Harbor Freight puller. You are able to rent a puller/installer tool at most local parts stores. They will be heavily used and the threads may be damaged, use caution. Thoroughly inpect the tool before using them. Local parts stores usually have the OEMTools brand which is a decent tool. You can place a wrench on the bearing and a 3/8's ratchet on the install bolt. However, we reccomend the Lisle 39000. This one gives you a sturdy grip handle that replaces the wrench you would need with the others. 

DO NOT just find the bolt size and thread pitch so you can run a bolt and a washer you may have on hand to install the pulley as this may break the bolt off inside the pump shaft, damage the shaft itself and the bearing or bushing that is supporting it, or damage the pulley. The install/removal tool kits come with a bearing to keep the heat and friction to a minimum. 

 

Before you install a Dirty Dingo Motorsports billet pulley, mock it up to see if it will fit your project. Once the pulley has been installed, it is no longer returnable. 

Install

Now that you have acquired the correct tool to do the job, lets go over the install procedure. Inspect your tools to make sure there are no nicks on the threads and they are clean. These power steering pump pulley removal/install kits come with multiple threaded shafts as it is a multi tool for multiple vehicles. Remember: It is easier to constantly remove the install tool to verify if you have installed the pulley all the way than it is to have to use the removal tool to bring it back into proper alignmnent. 

  1. Inspect your power steering pump shaft and the threads inside to ensure it is clean and the threads are good. Lube threads on the install tool before you begin.
  2. Test the different shafts out for fitment before doing anything as using the wrong size will damage your pump and pulley. 
  3. Evenly place the pulley on the pump shaft.
  4. Thread the install tool all the way down into the pump shaft. If you have a fancy billet pulley, put a barrier such as a rag or several pieces of paper in between the pulley and the bearing so you dont scratch it. 
  5. Lower the bearing til it meets the power steering pulley snout. 
  6. Verify the pulley is still evenly placed on the pump shaft. 
  7. Set your ratchet to OFF and crank the wrench down on the bearing to press the pulley onto the pump shaft while periodically checking to ensure you have installed the pulley all the way.

 

Removal

The collar halves that wrap around the snout of the pulley for removal only fit on one way. Make sure you put it in the correct way so you get the most grip on the snout otherwise you will cause damage. Destroying the snout may require you to cut the pulley in half to be able to remove it. 

  1. Inspect your power steering pump shaft and the threads inside to ensure it is clean and the threads are good. Lube threads on the removal tool before you begin.
  2. Test the different shafts out for fitment before doing anything as using the wrong size will damage your pump and pulley. 
  3. Place the collar halves of the removal tool on the pulley snout verifying you have it on the correct way.
  4. Hand thread the removal tool the rest of the way.
  5. Grab your ratchet and wrench and remove the pulley.
