LS Oil Pan Information

Displacement on Demand (DoD) / Active Fuel Management (AFM)

Displacement on Demand (DoD),  also known as Active Fuel Management (AFM), engines require an oil-pressure bypass valve in the oil pan. You can call companies such as Texas Speed and Performance, Scoggin Dickey Parts Center, Brian Tooley Racing, or Tick Performance for a DoD delete kit. Most aftermarket camshafts are not designed for DoD/AFM. It is reccomended to delete DoD/AFM as the lifters are well known to fail and also affect oil consumption. Ensure your local laws do not require you to retain all engine components for your swap before removing them.

Oil Coolers , Turbo Feeds, and Turbo Drains

OEM oil coolers come out of the block right above the oil filter and may get in the way of aftermarket conversion motor mounts. In some cases you are able to cut and modify the lines to make them work, but you should plan ahead and budget for an aftermarket oil cooler. Not all LS engines come with an oil cooler, they are typically found in heavy duty trucks and performance package vehicles such as a Corvette and the Caprice PPV. The forward port for the oil cooler lines is the outlet and the rear is the outlet. Most common place for the oil cooler is in front of the radiator. In some tighter situations it is acceptable to put an oil cooler elsewhere but you will need to consider also running an electric fan.

The oil cooler ports are commonly used to feed turbos, but never for a drain as they are pressurized and can backfeed into your turbo. Check out our custom billet oil pressure block that fits all OEM GM oil pans. We also sell it as a kit, we have a single turbo feed and a twin turbo feed setup with the most common length lines.

Some oil pans come with turbo drains such as the 302-3. You can buy timing covers with turbo drain ports already installed, just make sure they clear your front accessory drive. DO NOT cut into the embossments on your timing cover to fit a bung for the drain. The embossments are there to clear the bolts on the oil pump. DO NOT use your oil level sensor as the drain as you want the drain above the oil level line to prevent the line from backfeeding into the turbo. The most common turbo drain soluting is welding a bung to the oil pan towards the top of the pan so it is above the oil level. Placing the bung inline with a main cap helps lower the chance of oil splashing onto your crank causing a parasitic drain of horsepower.

*All LS GEN III/IV oil pans are interchangeable. The only limiting factors would be the stroke of your engine and the pressure relief valve for AFM/VVT.  The pressure relief valve is M14x1.5 if you want to plug it. Improved Racing sells a plug.Torque spec is 30-40 ft lbs.

*If you are not using the oil level sensor, you can leave the sensor in the pan as a plug. If you don't like the look, the thread is M20x1.5 and you can buy Dorman 65221 at a local parts store for about $3 to plug it.

*The only thing 2010-2015 Camaro/G8/Caprice oil pans fit are their original application, custom tube chassis sand rails, and boats. This note is here as there are a lot of crate engines sold with this oil pan so you can avoid paying for something you can't use.

*GTO's had a front sump pan. Do not buy them used if the tube assembly is broken as they are NLA. If you buy them new from the dealer they will come installed. Due to the rising cost and limited availability of this pan, you may want to look at Moroso front sump pans instead. 04 GTO is GEN III and did not have the pressure relief valve while 05 and 06 did.

*We list everything required for the Holley oil pans in the item description, all you have to do is click the link right next to the listed pan.

*All LS GM oil pans use the same drain plug. 12mm x1.75. ACDelco has a magnetic plug, pn: 23011420

*Early stock oil pans used a PF46 oil filter while later models used a PF48 oil filter. If you buy a brand new F-body oil pan (98-02 Camaro), it will come with PF48 threads. In some cases it is easier to tell the local parts store you have a 2010 Camaro than to deal with explaining the differences.
